Irma Schogt houdt op 1 oktober een lezing tijdens onze Open-Huisbijeenkomst: ‘Financiële astrologie komt niet uit de lucht vallen, een omschrijving van het onderzoek naar historische koersendata en economie en de gevonden historische samenhang met de loop van planeten’. De website van Correlation is vernieuwd, dus het is de moeite waard er eens te gaan kijken. Er is een interessante selectie te vinden van artikelen uit het blad. Onlangs verscheen Test of Astrology van Geoffrey Dean, Arthur Mather, David Nias, Rudolf Smit. Dit boek is de opvolger van Astrology under Scrutiny. Meer informatie erover vindt u op de site van Astrology and Science. Op de website van Correlation vindt u commentaren van mensen wier werk in het boek besproken wordt: Jan Ruis en Kyösti Tarvainen.

De laatste versie van Het einde der tijden? staat op de website. Ook is de Engelse versie nu beschikbaar: The End of the World, 2014-2026. Uit de vakpers

Astrofocus nr. 66 dec 2014 Hans Hamaker, ‘De duiding ontraadseld’. Beschouwing over essentiële voorwaarden voor astrologische duiding en reactie op een beschouwing hierover van Jan Kampherbeek (e-book). Hamaker stelt: “Wat ik in deze beschouwing (van Jan Kampherbeek) mis, is de expliciete benoeming (...) dat een mantisch systeem naar mijn idee een wichel handeling vereist, een actieve handeling volgens een bepaalde methode, met het doel inzicht in een situatie of antwoord op een vraag te krijgen”. Research project: So, how was the last Mars in Aquarius for you? Een groepje astrologiestudenten in Spanje werd gevraagd bij te houden of er saillante gebeurtenissen optraden tijdens de gang van Mars door Waterman van 04-12-2014 tot 12-01-2015. Het artikel geeft een verslag van een aantal gebeurtenissen die als relevant werden beschouwd. Het onderzoek is weinig geobjectiveerd. Wanneer de studenten tijdens hun ‘waarnemingen’ wisten dat het om Mars door Waterman ging, is de kans op zelfattributie groot. Ook wanneer ze alleen een bepaalde periode moesten observeren is de kans groot dat in elk geval enkelen van hen ontdekt hebben dat het om Mars in Waterman ging. Dat reduceert de waarde van het onderzoek flink. Astrofocus geeft geen bronvermelding, maar we konden het terugvinden in The Astrological Journal May/Jun 2015 p.22. (Via het secretariaat op te vragen.) Bovenstaand artikel brengt een vergelijkbaar maar veel beter onderzoek in herinnering terug: ‘Empirische Untersuchung über den Gehalt astrologischer Symbolik in Übereinstimmung mit erlebter Situation’ (Empirisch onderzoek naar de inhoud van de astrologische symboliek in overeenstemming met de ervaren situatie) van Brigitte Hueber. In dit afstudeeronderzoek voor de Universiteit Wenen werd mensen gevraagd gedurende een bepaalde periode hun gevoelens in een dagboek bij te houden. Zelfattributie kon hier worden uitgesloten. U vindt het op de website van Brigitte Hueber. Interessant interview met Edward Snow van de Astrology News Service. De Astrology News Service wil de geloofwaardigheid en de maatschappelijke onderwaardering van astrologie onder de aandacht brengen en weerwoord bieden aan wetenschappelijke skeptici en ‘debunkers’. De ANS wordt ondesteund door ‘big players’, te weten: grote Amerikaanse astrologieverenigingen. Een paar hoofdpunten uit het interview: There is an online news magazine (the ANS website) and a plan to distribute to the media news features that stress believability and astrology’s underappreciated value to society. Among other things, ANS is an experiment dedicated to discovering if the community can find the will to proactively address its woeful public image. A proactive approach. A major goal of ANS is to identify and present astrology’s most intelligent and saleable arguments in a news feature format. We also publish articles bylined by astrological experts. Uniquely, ANS content is edited for an informed general audience; no charts or astrological jargon allowed. What we didn’t anticipate is that the website would be as popular with astrologers as it appears to be. What must astrologers do in your opinion to win greater respect from scientists? An easy answer is being more like them. Do things their way. Get advanced degrees and imitate the process scientists use to sort things out in the natural world. There are well-educated and credentialled astrologers active in the world today and these individuals are having an impact. More good news: scientific researchers have begun to unravel some of the hardcore assumptions and arguments truebelieving sceptics have used to debunk and demean astrologers since the 17th century. What’s emerging is a new paradigm that may be less hostile to the astrological worldview. It might be a worthwhile thing to remind the scientific community that our parallel universes are drifting closer together − whenever an opportunity arises. In truth, the ANS program doesn’t specifically target the scientific community. But the most popular stories published on the website describe specific astrological research studies that have beaten the odds to produce statistically significant results. Given the lack of funding and limited opportunities to publish academic journals, it’s remarkable that any astrological research gets done at all. ANS is committed to publicising those research studies we learn about that support believability of the astrological premise. Edward Snow, Nieuwe studie bevestigt de ‘plus zones’ van Gauquelin. Snow is managing director van ANS, Astrological News Service. Gauquelins onderzoek komt ter sprake en ook het onderzoek van Suzel Fuseau-Braesch. Er wordt verband gelegd tussen de radix-Ascendant en gedrag bij honden, met name Zon en/of Jupiter rijzend en dominanter gedrag. Dit is de opmaat naar een studie van prof. David Fink van Johnson State College in Vermont die gedurende 15 jaar vanaf bij 932 studenten onderzocht of een rijzende Jupiter dan wel Saturnus gerelateerd kon worden aan introversie⁄extraversie en dit statistisch significant aantoonde. Astrofocus vermeldt geen bron voor dit onderzoek, maar we vonden een artikel op Astrology News Service. Capricorn Astrology Research: interview met een anonieme astroloog achter de site Astrology Research. Doel van de site: “The purpose of my website is to work as a research resource for other astrologers. My strong belief is that astrology can be proved by conventional statistical analysis, so my hope is that the site can give astrologers some ammunition and confidence in facing their many critics in scientific fields (...)” Over eigen onderzoek: “For some time I had noticed a 12th house placing of the Sun for leading politicians so I decided to see if these observations could be tested statistically. I analysed every chart on the Astro-Databank section for public figures. The only criterion was that they had to have a reliable birth time. This involved over 20,000 charts. The headline findings of the study are that in the charts of 20,000+ public figures, the Sun is far more likely to appear in the 12th, the first or the 11th house than in any other house. The least likely places are the 5th, 6th and 7th.” De probability waarde bleek astronomisch laag (er was geen hypothese vooraf). “Some critics have pointed to the growing use of elected caesarian births, which are often timed in the late morning, therefore producing a peak for the Sun the l0th , 11th and I2th houses. This is an interesting objection, but it does not apply to my work as the vast majonty of my charts were of people born long before 1970, in a time when elected caesarians did not occur. To date I have well over one hundred different research projects that prove a statistical astrological link with a p-figure of less than 0.001.” Hij noemt nog wat onderzoeken naar homofilie, accident proneness, transits van Pluto en relatieve sterkte van planeten, bijvoorbeeld een Jupiter-Saturnusindex met sterke resultaten. Het interview besluit met: “As a triple Capricorn, my main aim is to get astrology taken more seriously.” Astrological Journal sep–okt 2015 Wetenschapper steunt astrologie: A highly respected scientist has concluded that astrology ‘works’ in certain specific ways and is worth further investigation. Dr Mark A. Hamilton of the University of Connecticut published findings in the peer-reviewed Comprehensive Psychology (2015, Volume 4, Article 7). His especial interest was whether astrology could predict ‘celebrity’ (based on birth time, seasonality and certain traits). An interview can be found at Laboratory Equipment en het artikel van dr Hamilton: Astrology as a culturally transmitted heuristic scheme for understanding seasonality effects: a response to Genovese (2014) Onderzoek Gun Hansson ‘Astrology and the single woman’ over vrouwen die nooit trouwden versus vrouwen die dat wel deden in Zweden tussen 1910 en 1930. 1200 data in beide groepen, 60 uit elk jaar. Geen geboortetijden. Over dit onderzoek zegt ze: “My research produced eight statistical significances including one strong and two bordering significance, by Standard criteria (...). I looked at the sign positions of Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars, as well as their aspects to each other and to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The aspects used are conjunctions, squares, trines and oppositions. The orb is 9.” Bij de groep nooit getrouwde vrouwen vond ze de volgende posities significant vaker: Venus in Virgo, Venus conjunct Saturnus, Venus oppositie Uranus, Mercurius conjunct Neptunus of Mars conjunct Neptunus. Bij de getrouwden: vaker Zon in Steenbok, Venus driehoek Saturnus of Mercurius in Stier. Ze gaat in op de betekenissen van deze aspecten, waarbij ze opmerkt dat bij de helft van haar resultaten Venus betrokken is, en op een aantal beperkingen van het onderzoek. De Zweedse Hansson publiceerde eerder in de Astrological Journal.

Uit de vakpers: In deze rubriek besteden we aandacht aan artikelen uit ASAScoop gerelateerd aan de ASAS, Astrofocus, gerelateerd aan de AVN, en het Astrological Journal, gerelateerd aan de Engelse Astrological Association. Genoemde bladen zijn in onze bibliotheek aanwezig. Het gaat niet om alle artikelen, maar om die onderwerpen die voor de NVWOA relevant zijn. Relevant betekent dat een artikel te maken heeft met onderzoek, of dat het gaat om een beschouwing van algemene astrologische principes. U vindt hier dus geen complete inhoudsopgaven!
